Happy (belated) birthday, Peter Lindbergh!

Happy (belated) birthday, Peter Lindbergh!

Happy birthday, Peter Lindbergh!

On 23 November an extraordinary fashion world icon celebrated his 70th birthday: German photographer and filmmaker Peter Lindbergh. In the late 70s and in his mid-thirties the German moved to Paris after a successful study of the arts and with a rising interest in photography. This is where his international career began. He took pictures for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bazaar, and many more. When Anna Wintour came to American Vogue in 1988 she chose Lindbergh for the legendary November cover shoot.

He might have had his biggest coup in 1990. He was able to unite Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford for an iconic cover shoot of British Vogue and, thus, started the supermodel era.

The multitalented Lindbergh also directed a movie about the supermodels: Models- The Movie was released in 1991 and his last film Everywhere At Once was shown in Cannes Film Festival and had its world premiere in New York in 2008.

In the course of his career Lindbergh took photos of nearly every great: actors Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, and John Travolta, music starts such as Tina Turner, Mick Jagger and Madonna, and models Kate Moss and Milla Jovovich posed for him.

Shortly before his 70th birthday Gagosian Gallery in Paris opened an exhibition with his works; photos from the past 30 years, mostly b/w portraits. Due to the huge success the exhibition was extended until end of December. Happy birthday, Peter Lindbergh!
