We have seen the original storm umbrella – No explanations needed!
I really like our new label of the month, because I already had 500 of my umbrellas break down in my life and it looks like this will come to an end: This special umbrellas doesn’t turn inside out when there is a little wind – they are storm proof up to 100km/h (check more videos here). And it doesn’t matter how strong the rain is – the shape of a senz° umbrella will keep you dry from head to toe and do not limit your visibility- FANTASTIC!
The new line – senz⁶ – combines the original technology of the senz° storm umbrellas with exclusive and special designs, because an umbrella is more than just “rain protection” – it is a statement!
We had an interview with Remco Korf to get an overview of the brand and the idea behind it.
Please tell us something about your brand and the ideas behind it?
The idea behind senz6 is to promote the umbrella as a fashion accessory. When I was reading about Senz umbrellas in a local newspaper, I was so impressed by the technology behind it, that I decided to investigate the brand a bit more. It crossed my mind that you rarely see umbrellas being sold in fashion stores. I approached Senz umbrellas and pitched the idea to launch a sub-line that would specifically target the upper market of the fashion industry. What’s special about your brand? What do you want to achieve in the future?
It can resist 100 km/h wind-speeds. Before Senz started making umbrellas, the design of umbrellas has basically never changed since the Egyptians invented it 3400 years ago. Yearly 1.1 billion umbrellas are thrown away, so it makes sense to produce durable umbrellas to reduce our waist.
What’s your design process like?
To make umbrellas for this specific target group, I asked my long-term friend Yoske Nishiumi to join the team. I have been working with Yoske at Asics. Yoske is one of the most informed and up to date persons in the industry and a talented designer as well. The process is simple, we brief Yoske on the target group and the number of umbrellas we need. Afterwards Yoske creates a concept for the collection – mostly based on his travels – and starts working on it. Together with Yoske and the team we make a final selection of the prints, that Yoske designed before.
What was the most exciting experience having your own brand / company ?
Seeing products you worked on (or initiated) being used on the streets by random people – that’s a special feeling. The launch of Senz6 was my idea, but Senz umbrellas is still the owner of the brand Senz6. Besides developing this idea, I am the world-wide agent and I am also co-managing the brand Senz6 – together with a team from Senz. Additionally I have my own company where I also represent other brands.
Which three pieces are your favorites out of your current collection?
I live in Rotterdam where it is often windy, so I use the original model (stick model, wind proof up to 100 km/h) mostly in dazzle camo or dot dot print. When I am traveling I take the foldable umbrella (wind proof up to 80 km/h) in space place print.’
In the end, please tell us something about the location your company is based? Which places (restaurants, shops, bars, …) near by would you also recommend?
When you enter the city by using a water-taxi you get a nice view of the skyline in Rotterdam. Rotterdam is the second biggest harbor in the world, so it makes sense to enter by water. For breakfast I enjoy going to Picknick and for coffee I go to Hopper
. Sometimes I treat myself on fresh fish at Schmidt
for lunch, they have a few standing tables, so it’s not really a restaurant but nevertheless a nice experience. For dinner I would recommend the restaurant de Jong
. The last few years a lot of new places opened up, so there are much more nice places to eat.
