Label of the month: Stockholm’s UNIFORMS FOR THE DEDICATED

Label of the month: Stockholm’s UNIFORMS FOR THE DEDICATED

UNIFORMS FOR THE DEDICATED started out in 2007 as a collective of friends and artists based in Stockholm. The menswear brand’s designs combine playful details and functionality with a fresh and modern approach towards menswear’s classic codes, creating a full wardrobe for casual gentlemen while staying true to their philosophy of “(…) creating products and projects we believe in, within the fields we enjoy, in a manner we can be proud of, we aim to inspire ourselves and others without ever compromising our core value of treating the Earth with respect.” Check out our interview and some special Stockholm recommendations after the cut!

TLF: Please tell us something about your brand and the ideas behind it?

UNIFORMS FOR THE DEDICATED creates timeless yet exciting garments for confident and demanding men. We are, in essence, a men’s fashion label – and we aim to be the very best in every way.

This ambition entails, but is not limited to, the clothes we make. We aspire to greatness in quality, design and choice of materials, and we try to create garments that will last and be worn year in and year out. It is a matter of sustainability, and for us at UNIFORMS FOR THE DEDICATED it is important to show that sustainability doesn’t have to conflict with financial gains.

Simply put we‘re making garments for men of the world with high standards and curious mindsets, this in the most sustainable way possible.

In 2002, a close-knit group of friends, passionately in love with snowboarding and the mountain slopes, decided that their friendship should focus on caring for those very mountains. That it needed to amount to more than simply using the environment around them.

It took its time of course, but in 2007 we formed UNIFORMS FOR THE DEDICATED.
For us, it was a way of testing our entrepreneurial wingspan. We wanted to prove to ourselves, and to others, that it was possible to launch a company without any previous business experience. And that it could be done in a sustainable manner – ethically, environmentally and financially.

TLF: What’s special about your brand? What do you want to achieve in the future?

We strive towards being more than just a brand among many others. More than just a label. Why? Well, that answer is twofold. First off, we really don’t have a choice, do we? A change has to come; we owe it to ourselves and to coming generations. There is, however, another answer as well. It is one of vanity, of finding a purpose and a meaning to our own lives. Call it the entrepreneurial rock star fantasy if you will, but in the end, we want to have mattered. We want to have left a mark, if ever so small, on the world we in time will leave behind.

Either we keep living like there’s no tomorrow, or we take action and create a tomorrow that we and future generations can enjoy. Our ambition is to inspire consumers as well as other companies to start making changes, we want to drive the change towards a more sustainable fashion industry.

TLF: What’s your design process like?

Design and elegance, according to us, is subtle. It’s comfortable. It’s classic and timeless, consistent, but with an element of surprise. It’s the joining of forces of past and present – of iconic fits and modern messages.

Taking design from the abstract into our collections can mean many things. It’s a balancing act on choices of fabrics, colours, details and cuts. It can, for example, be the slightly elevated stroke of inspiration of a pocket detail, a patterned lining, or the use of stretch materials where you would not expect it. Hence as we’re basing our design in classic or slightly updated fits and models most of our design process in spent on developing fabrics and details that live up to the above and to our demanding customer.

TLF: Which three pieces are your favorites out of your current collection?

It would be the black paisley Ginsburg blazer with matching Illusions track suit pants, the Burroughs wool dark brown and black herringbone coat and our Turmoil print Seducer shirt. The last product is based on a hand drawn illustration done by our family member surrealist painter Antonio Lourenco.

TLF: What are some of of your favorite stores? (that you’re selling to or otherwise)

Some of our current partners that we respect and see doing things a bit more elevated and out of the books are Liberty of LondonIsetan in Tokyo, Luisa Via Roma in Florence, Voo Store in Berlin, Coïncidence in Paris. We’re also rather proud of our own store in Stockholm. Others we truly respect and see constantly delivering are London’s Dover Street MarketThe Broken Arm in Paris and London-based footwear brand Mr Hare.

In the end, please tell us something about the location your company is based? Which places (restaurants, shops, bars, …) near by would you also recommend?
We’re based on the west end side of the south Island, Södermalm, of Stockholm, a great place to live, work and run our retail. It´s lively but relaxed, filled with refined local establishments as well as nature. Best recommendations for clothing is Nitty Gritty men’s and women’s, for books and magazines it’s Papercut, for vintage design I would say Wigerdahls Värld, for coffee Mellqvist is the go-to-place and for food and cocktails Tjoget is a must. The best walk and view of Stockholm is Monteliuz vägen.

Located on the island of Södermalm, our own store offers our full range of garments, several unique pieces from our furniture collection and other carefully selected things.
Besides the obvious choice of paying us a visit we also have great neighbours such as Nitty Gritty, Our Legacy and Paper Cut, there are simply many good reasons to stop by. We are looking forward to welcoming you!
